Bio-engineered 'bulletproof' human skin reinforced with spider silk

Now to be protected you do not need the bullet proof jacket or any bullet proof media. Because A Dutch team created a piece of "bulletproof" skin from special, U.S.-made spider silk and human skin cells and found that it indeed can repel bullets -- as long as they're not traveling too fast. The project is called “2.6 g 329m/s” which is the standard weight and velocity that a Type 1 bulletproof vest can protect against.Jalila Essaidi, of the Forensic Genomics Consortium in the Netherlands, along with contributors from other research institutes in the Netherlands and the U.S., have developed a "bulletproof" skin that was originally an art project that demonstrated the "relative concept of safety."
bullet proof skin
The skin is mixed with goat 'milk' from goats 'tweaked' to produce the same protein found in spider silk. Woven spider silk is four times stronger than Kevlar, the material used in bulletproof vests.
The spider silk and human skin cells were combined to create the "bulletproof" patch of skin. While this piece of skin is somewhat bulletproof, it cannot repel fast-moving bullets. For instance, it was pierced by a bullet shot at normal speed from a .22 caliber rifle, which is the standard level of protection for a Type 1 bulletproof vest. However, the patch of skin was able to prevent the penetration of a bullet shot at lower speeds (the researchers conveniently didn’t report the how fast the “lower speeds” were).
Bullet proof skin
Such skin is still a long way from adding practical protection to humans, but it gives a glimpse of what future soldiers or would-be superheroes might expect. After all, the U.S. military and other armed forces have continually sought new ways to bulletproof their warriors on the battlefield, and also have shown interest in discovering the ultimate warrior genes.
For now, anyone can check out the bulletproof skin in Leiden, Netherlands; it's on display at the National Natural History Museum Naturalis until Jan. 8, 2012.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt kiss their way through the SAG Awards For the cutest couple

They are one of the most famous couples in the world. And though their romance has been very public from the start, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt don't usually indulge in public displays of affection.
Brad pitt and jolie kissing in SAG Award
So it was a huge surprise when the pair shared a series of tender kisses on the red carpet at last night's Screen Actors Guild awards.
There is also the tantalising possibility that the pair are about to get engaged. In a recent interview, Brad said that he wanted to marry his long-term partner because it meant so much to their six children. Earlier in the evening the pair arrived on the red carpet and were greeted by pandemonium. As ever Brad proved the perfect gentleman and stepped out of the car and made his way around the car to open the door for Angelina.

George Clooney and girlfriend Stacy Keibler also commanded plenty of attention and the pair proved popular on the red carpet. The couples met up on the red carpet and posed for pictures together. Brad and George are old friends and shared a spot of mutual appreciation as they met on the red carpet and shared a warm embrace.

Liverpool make cheeky attempt to take Tevez on loan

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish would take Carlos Tevez on loan – if Manchester City let their rebel star leave before the window shuts. , Liverpool have offered Andy Carroll to Manchester City as a part of a swap deal for Carlos Tevez, just a year after Carroll moved to the club from Newcastle for a fee of £35million. City, though, have rejected the approach. Duh.
Carlos Tevez
The logic behind a swap is obvious, but obvious in the sense that a thick person might think of it, not obvious as in: obviously right. Yes, Carroll has failed to settle at Liverpool and Tevez has only recently spoken of coming off strike at City, but no, this does not make Liverpool’s attempt to swap an oaf for a world class talent in any way reasonable. United have to pay around £22million to keep Tevez at the club after a complicated two-year loan agreement expires. But today's Times reports Rafa Benitez is keen to battle Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester City for his signature. Sir Alex Ferguson would be loathe to see Tevez sign for a rival after blocking Gabriel Heinze's switch to Liverpool two years ago.

Brad Pitt "Would Like" to Marry Angelina Jolie!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have long held the belief that marriage is not in the cards for them, at least until gay marriage is legal and everyone has the right. Well, there are at least six reasons they may change their mind. "We'd actually like to get married, and it seems to mean more and more to our kids," Pitt tells The Hollywood Reporter of the couple's current thoughts.
"We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to until everyone can, and we feel strongly about it. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out." Does that mean he's proposed to Angelina Jolie, his partner of seven years? "I'm not going to go any further," says the Best Actor nominee for Moneyball. "[But] it means so much to my kids, and they ask about it a lot these days. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment."

In any case, Brad it loving life these days, which wasn't always the case. Before Jolie and their brood, Pitt says he went through a much darker period. "I used to deal with depression, not this decade - maybe last decade," says Pitt. "But that's also figuring out who you are. I see it as a great education." "One of the seasons or a semester. 'This semester I majored in depression.'" source Hollywood gossip

girl who suffered from premature ageing disease

Tributes have been paid at the funeral of an 'inspirational' woman who died after suffering an extremely rare genetic condition that caused premature ageing. Adrienne Greenway, 25, from Dover, passed away earlier this month from pneumonia, with her funeral taking place earlier this week. Mourners in attendance included Hollywood stars Jude Law and Sienna Miller, who stunned friends and family at St John's Church in Coleford by turning up to say goodbye.
Adrienne suffered from what doctors thought was a premature ageing disease. Sufferers rarely outlive their teens. The vibrant young woman had won a string of celebrity admirers for her attitude and charity work, including Stella McCartney - who even designed a dress for her. ich was held as a celebration of her life. She was buried in Clearwell before relatives held a wake at a nearby pub. Allison added: 'She was an inspiration. She inspired everyone she met, she was a beautiful girl.
'Time and time again the doctors had said "this is it, it's time to go now" and she had always come through. 'But she knew and we knew that this time was different. She understood she had a better place to go to. 'It was exactly how she wanted it, she put her head down and curled up with her family there with her." 'She had an incredible life, she has travelled the world but she also loved that she had "normal" friends and was able to go to "normal" school. 'She always put other people first and was conscious of those worse off than her.' Adrienne leaves two sisters, Hayley and Lindsay, mother Allison and stepfather Jim. source daily mail

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange launching TV talk show

International secret-buster Julian Assange says he's launching his very own television series. The guests haven't been disclosed, but the 40-year-old Australian has promised to give viewers more of what he's been supplying for years: Controversy.  The group’s founder will host 10 half-hour episodes that will be conversations between Assange and “controversial voices from across the political spectrum— iconoclasts, visionaries and power insiders — each to offer a window on the world tomorrow and their ideas on how to secure a brighter future.”
 Julian Assange

"Through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it," Assange said in a statement. "Are we heading towards utopia, or dystopia and how we can set our paths? This is an exciting opportunity to discuss the vision of my guests in a new style of show that examines their philosophies and struggles in a deeper and clearer way than has been done before."
Wikileaks

How the show will be produced and who will carry it remain open questions. Wikileaks has said they plan for the show to be broadcast on cable, satellite and terrestrial networks.
There are few details about the show, other than that it will air in March and requsts for licensing deals can be sent through Quick Roll Productions, a Web site that the Associated Press discovered only launched two weeks ago.
